Synastry is the branch of astrology that examines how two people's birth charts interact. When you overlay one person's chart on top of another's, the planets from one chart form aspects to the planets in the other — and these inter-chart aspects reveal the nature of the relationship: its strengths, its challenges, its karmic purpose, and its potential.
A synastry reading looks at which planets from Person A's chart aspect which planets from Person B's chart, and what those connections mean. A Venus-Mars conjunction between two charts, for example, indicates powerful romantic and physical attraction. A Saturn-Sun square might indicate one person feeling restricted or judged by the other.
The composite chart is a different but complementary technique: instead of overlaying two charts, you calculate the midpoints between each pair of planets to create a single chart that represents the relationship itself as an entity. The composite chart shows the relationship's purpose, strengths, and challenges as a whole.
You share the same core identity and life purpose. There is an immediate sense of recognition — like looking in a mirror. This can be deeply validating or intensely competitive.
The Sun person illuminates and energizes the Moon person's emotional world. The Moon person nurtures and supports the Sun person's identity. This is one of the most powerful romantic indicators in synastry.
Electric physical and romantic attraction. The Venus person embodies exactly what the Mars person desires, and the Mars person pursues the Venus person with passion. This aspect creates intense chemistry.
You feel each other's emotions instinctively. There is a deep emotional resonance and understanding. You likely have similar emotional needs and comfort styles.
You share the same aesthetic sensibilities, values, and love language. You enjoy the same things and express affection in compatible ways. A beautiful indicator of harmony.
Effortless emotional support and understanding. The Sun person's identity naturally supports the Moon person's emotional needs. This aspect creates a comfortable, nurturing dynamic.
You think alike and communicate naturally. Conversations flow easily and you understand each other's thought processes without much effort. Excellent for any long-term partnership.
The Saturn person brings structure, discipline, and sometimes restriction to the Sun person's life. This can feel supportive or limiting depending on maturity. Often indicates a karmic, long-lasting bond.
Friction, competition, and potential conflict. You may clash over how to take action or what to pursue. This aspect requires conscious effort to channel the energy constructively rather than combatively.
The Sun person's identity and the Moon person's emotional needs are at cross-purposes. There can be misunderstandings and friction, but also powerful growth if both partners are willing to stretch.
Obsessive, transformative attraction. The Pluto person may try to control or transform the Venus person. This aspect creates intense passion but also the potential for power struggles and jealousy.
The Sun/Moon/Venus person is here to help the Node person fulfill their soul's purpose. This feels fated and significant. Often indicates a relationship that changes both people's lives.
